I don’t know about your kids, but mine love SPAGHETTI! At 16, my daughter “carbs up” before her major sporting events and frequently requests spaghetti, sauce and bread for dinner. When I am not in the mood to cook, one of our favorite places to go out and eat at is the Spaghetti Warehouse. In honor of today’s salute to spaghetti, here are our family favorites from the Dayton Spaghetti Warehouse. For National Spaghetti Day, they have $6 Spaghetti and Alfredo! Bundle up the kids and head out for a family pasta night in celebration of this special day.
In case you have never been to Spaghetti Warehouse, let me walk you through this dining extravaganza! First, they start you off with your drinks and their warm sourdough bread complete with garlic butter. We personally love their strawberry lemonade. The strawberries floating in the lemonade sets them apart from just the plain fountain lemonade of other restaurants. And the garlic butter – I am going to warn you, it’s just as addicting as these loaves of sourdough bread.
Before we get to the actual soup, salad and dinner options, let’s talk about seating. This place is fun!! There’s lots of great decor so plan on a game of “I spy” to keep the kids occupied. If they are into trains or trolleys, ask to be seated in the trolley car. There are fun booths made of interesting items, but mostly headboards and footboards from old beds. Tables abound and there is no lack of seating. The kids will probably want to walk around a bit and take it all in – this is after all more than just a restaurant – it’s a destination.
Let’s get back to the food. Soup or salad will be an option. A salad needs no explanation. Their minestrone soup is my favorite as with the rest of my motley crew. They do offer a wedding soup. I’ve not had it but my friend loves it, and she has good taste. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu here.
For your main course, selection abounds. Our family favorites are the following:
Spaghetti and Meatballs
Spaghetti topped with 3 large hand-rolled beef and pork meatballs and covered with more made-from-scratch tomato sauce. These are not heavy meatballs but delicious and worth their weight in gold. I personally am not a meatball person but love these!
Hand-breaded, crispy chicken breast topped with madefresh-daily tomato sauce and melted mozzarella. Served with Spaghetti with tomato sauce and fresh basil. Once again, Spaghetti Warehouse hits this one on the head. The chicken isn’t dry and it’s cooked to perfection with just the right amount of crispiness in the chicken breast.
15 Layer Lasagna
Layer after layer of lasagne noodles, meat sauce, Italian pork sausage, ground beef and Romano, ricotta and mozzarella cheeses. Made by hand daily and topped with more homemade meat sauce. If you haven’t been able to tell by my other comments, I am a picky eater. I’m also not a fan of cheese. This lasagna won me over the very first time I had it as it has the right combination of meat, noodles and cheese. Lasagna to me is more about the meat and the sauce than the noodles and the cheese -so this is perfect!
Here’s a tip for eating at the Spaghetti Warehouse – plan on sharing one of these large meals – it is enough for two unless you are a heavy eater. We order a meal for each person with the intention of taking home half for leftovers the next day. Save room for dessert as you won’t want to miss out on the chocolate cake. This is a dessert you will more than likely share. We order one for the entire family and at times have had trouble finishing it. Again, while not a fan of chocolate cake, this one is light and moist and is perfectly paired with 2 scoops of vanilla ice cream. By far, this is my favorite dessert on the menu!
