Spotlight: Debra Rutt, Mom Blogger at A Harried Mom

The Harried Mom

What one word best describes your current state of mind? Why?

Harried, of course!

What inspired you to begin blogging? What do you blog about? Complete this sentence: “I blog because….

I blog because I need my sanity! It’s a creative outlet for me and a way for me to connect to other moms and parents so we can share our common experiences in raising a family and life. I always find it comforting to know that there are others going thru the same things as I am with raising my two kids.

Tell us about your day, your job and what inspires you to work.

I’m a working mom. Aside from my mommy CEO duties at home, I work full time in TV PR for a national cable network. I’ve been doing this for 20 years and I still love my job and it’s mostly because I love the medium of TV – it’s a shared experience and can shape and impact the way we live, love and act.

What current projects have you engaged and excited?

I enjoy blogging and now even vlogging – but working to take things even further with The Harried Mom. I’m looking into conferences and seminars to attend to get inspired and explore ideas and opportunities to expand and network.

What term or phrase do you most over use?

Do exclamation points count!!! I use them alot!!!!

What are 5 things/items you think moms can’t do without?

A support system
A clear understanding of their own strengths/weaknesses
A cell phone (even better, a smartphone)

What is the best parenting resource you would recommend? why?

I’ve always found that other moms are the best parenting resource out there. Moms are always “in the know” and are come up with clever ideas and solutions to issues/problems or everyday situations.

What do you do in your downtime to relax?

I like to watch TV, bad 70s shows – sitcoms or dramas. I love the clothes, the crazy hairstyles and the bad innuendos – I often laugh watching them, taking me to my happy place. I also like to knit – the repetitiveness of it has a calming affect on me.

What is your favorite part about being a mom?

The love from my kids…the enthusiastic hugs, kisses and excitement of everyday life with them.

What is a little known fact about you?

I’m deathly afraid of bridges and tunnels and I have to take either one or the other everyday in order to get to work. It’s not easy, but I somehow get thru it!
