Summer is nearly halfway over for the kids. Back-to-school sales flyers are appearing on the television and in the newspaper. Reading programs are still going strong and kids still need to be encouraged to read. One of our favorite publishing houses, Bright Sky Press, sent along some fun summer reading books that we’d like to highlight and encourage you to have your children read.
Are we the SAME, or are we DIFFERENT? Could both of these be true? Let’s get a little closer, And look at me and you! Lilting rhymes show children that everyone is different on the outside, but in all the ways that matter, we are the same. Author and artist Chris H. Bridge, known for her collaborative projects with children, looks at eyes, ears, hair, feelings and thoughts. Using simple direct language, she shows that while they appear different, they provide us the same experiences. Yes, we are DIFFERENT on the outside, you can see it’s true. But inside each of us is THE SAME HEART, ME AND YOU! Text in English and Spanish is amplified by call out words in major languages, and illustrations created by students celebrate the beauty of individual faces in the rich landscape of diversity. The Same Heart provides children with respect for every individual’s uniqueness and the importance of finding connection.
A rhyming picture book illustrated with children’s cutouts celebrates the idea that any place is a good place to read a book to a child. Where’s the best place to read a book? Now in a bilingual version, this Moonbeam Children’s Book Award winner of the Silver Medal for Reading Skills/Literacy, Read to Me! is a bright and bold picture book that proclaims that any place is a good place to share a story. And colorful collages featuring delightful cut outs made by children in a collaborative art project illustrate that there’s just no end to the places that are just right for reading.
